The debate over how long women should use bone density drugs, known as bisphosphonates, for osteoporosis continues especially after the Food & Drug Administration published an analysis of the safety of long term use of bisposphonates, such as Fosamax. The analysis published in the New England Journal of Medicine, reveals the FDA is concerned that the use of bisphosphonates actually contributes to rare but serious adverse events associated with bisphosphonates, such as atypical femur fractures,

Bone density drugs for treatment of osteoporosis have become the standard treatment for women suffering from this disorder.  However, a growing number of case reports describe women who developed fractures involving the femur after long term bisphosphonate therapy.  Fosamax is one   bisphosphonate drug.  The Journal of American Medical Association published on February 23, 2011 a major study entitled: Bisphosphonate Use and the Risk of Subtrochanteric or Femoral Shaft Fractures in Older Women. http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/305/8/783.short.  The study
